DC Comics officially announced its plans for a line-wide revamp in October, splitting the publishing line into two linked parts: the mainline DC Comics, and the new Absolute Universe, both under the label DC All In.
The news comes via a live stream from DC featuring the two architects of the revamp, Scott Snyder and Joshua Williamson. Williamson has been a steady hand behind multiple DC titles for years now, while this marks Snyder’s return to the publisher after a four-year break. Though he’s been working on this behind the scenes for two years, so really a two-year break. Maybe actually no break at all, I don’t know.
In October, Snyder, Williamson, and artists Daniel Sampere and Wes Craig will collaborate on DC All In Special #1, a one-shot that will reveal what sets up the tied-together worlds of the All In initiative. In the book, Darkseid will head on a quest — set up during the currently running Absolute Power event — that will bring him face-to-face with the reformed Justice League. The fallout will lead to two universes: the main DC universe, which will be “set up by Superman energy,” and the Absolute Universe, which will be “founded on Darkseid energy.” Because of the latter, the Absolute Universe characters are tougher and more resourceful.
The one-shot will take the form of a flip book, with Sampere drawing Superman’s perspective on the story, while Craig will draw Darkseid’s perspective. And spinning out of the one-shot, Williamson will continue to write Superman, with artist Dan Mora joining. The title will introduce a new Superwoman, and as previously teased in the book, will feature the return of Doomsday.
While they didn’t address this on the livestream, we know that Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta will likely be working on Absolute Batman, as the merchandise has already been revealed for San Diego Comic-Con.
In addition, the following creators teased their involvement in All In on social media: Kelly Thompson, Tom Taylor, Mikel Janín, Jason Aaron, Dexter Soy, Nick Robles, Ram V, Hayden Sherman, Torunn Grønbekk, Chris Condon, Elliott Kalan, and likely more.
Also: I am aware that the entire initial lineup seems to have leaked online, and you can find it if you want. But we won’t post it here until it’s officially announced by DC, most likely during San Diego Comic-Con.
After the one-shot drops in October, every single title — All In, and Absolute Universe — will kick off a new reader friendly storyline… And some new titles will launch, as well. Added Snyder, this initiative is “the greatest jumping on point.”
So what do you think, DC fans… Are you all in?
