David Ian McKendy and Rebekah McKendry are horror veterans, known for their films Glorious and All the Creatures Were Stirring. But the most horrifying thing possible? Trying something new. And that’s exactly what they’ll do with their first comic book ever, for Dark Horse Comics, titled Barstow.
“As avid horror comic book readers, we are elated to be working on our first comic book series with the legendary Dark Horse Comics,” said the McKendrys via a press release provided to Comic Book Club. “This whole experience has been a dream come true!”
In the four-issue miniseries, a woman named Agent Miranda Diaz is on the trail of another, missing agent… One who she’s never met before. She tracks him to Barstow, a town in the middle of the Mojave Desert. And there, she discovers something demonic is lurking. But also “oddball,” as this is a horror-comedy book.
“We first had the idea for Barstow while traveling very late on Sunday evening from Las Vegas to Los Angeles,” the McKendrys continued. “We fell in love with the wild stretch of road between the two cities, especially the area surrounding the Mojave Desert and all the towns in between. Though we used the name Barstow, our town in the series is an amalgam of all the quirky desert ‘burgs we have encountered in that area.”
Barstow includes art by Tyler Jenkins and letters by Justin Birch. The first issue hits stores on November 20, 2024. Check out the freaky cover to issue one, below.
