First, the good news. Based on a recent interview with star Nathan Mitchell, who played both the original Black Noir on The Boys and the new Black Noir II, it seems like the character will survive the upcoming season finale. Now, the bad news — at least for the characters in the world of the show… Mitchell also teased that the final season will get “chaotic” and “bats**t crazy.”
The news comes via an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, where Mitchell broke down the differences between his two versions of the character. And while it’s all a fascinating read, the part that probably concerns fans the most is when he was asked to talk about Season 5, aka the final season of The Boys.
“I think, season five is going to be chaotic,” Mitchell said. “We’re in a mad dash to the finish line and the stakes are higher than they’ve ever been. Everything is way more perilous for the Boys, and I think the Seven is going be as powerful as they have ever been… I don’t think The Boys have held back. But if there is anything left to unleash, we’re unleashing it in season five! It’s going to be bats**t crazy, and it’s going to be a battle for the outcome and the future of this world. And that’s the level we’re playing at.”
A few things to unpack there. First, it sure seems like Noir will be back for Season 5, particularly with Mitchell adding, “New Noir is probably going to be even more comfortable with killing. He’s growing into his role, so he’s more of a threat to the Boys now.” Mind you, plenty of actors have plugged a role going forward in an interview even though they die in the finale. But let’s say we take Mitchell at his word here.
The other thing to discuss is the level of the stakes. It’s not too surprising that Season 5 may become World War Boys. But will the show go Avengers: Endgame level and become the thing the series seems to hate? Or will it stick to the smaller, more personal stakes of Butcher (Karl Urban) versus Homelander (Antony Starr)?
One caveat, too, is who knows how much Mitchell knows about the final season, given they’re most likely still working out the episodes and writing them. But that said? He’s probably right. Chaos is the name of the game, and as we head towards the final episodes of the series, it wouldn’t be The Boys if things didn’t go a little bats**t crazy.
