One of my absolute favorite genres of articles in the trades (Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, Deadline, etc.) is when an actor is announced as “joining” a movie or series, despite that movie or show already being in production. But here’s a new, fresh twist on that… Byron Bowers has joined Marvel’s Wonder Man series, which concluded filming back in April.
He’s gonna be super late to set! Oh no!
The news comes via Deadline, which reports that as of now we also don’t know exactly who the actor is portraying in the series. And if you’re wondering what’s going on here, the simple explanation is this… Either his reps, Marvel Studios, or both decided it was okay to announce his participation in the series. That’s pretty much the long and short of it.
The slightly more in-depth explanation for why this announcement is coming out now is that Bowers plays the role of Slappy on Apple TV+’s Lady of the Lake, which premieres later this week (July 19) on the streaming service. Natalie Portman leads the show, and releasing the info about Bowers’s participation in Wonder Man helps elevate awareness of him, his role, and the Apple series. It’s a win all around!
Bowers has been a working comedian for a good long while, with appearances on The Eric Andre Show, Guy Code, and more. More recently he’s appeared in more dramatic fare like The Chi, Irma Vep, Swarm, and now Lady in the Lake.
As for Wonder Man, the Marvel series stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, a superhero actor. The show was created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, and also stars Ben Kingsley (reprising his role from Iron Man 3 and Shang-Chi), Demetrius Grosse, Ed Harris, and more.
As mentioned, shooting on the series concluded in April. It’s expected to run 10 episodes under the Marvel Spotlight banner, with a premiere date TBA. Perhaps we’ll know more when Marvel holds its semi-annual Hall H panel at the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con.
