Sad news for anybody who was hoping to be Fandango’s best ticket pre-seller of 2024 (I know I was): the honor may go to Deadpool & Wolverine, which the company has announced has already doubled every single other 2024 movie release in ticket pre-sales — at least at similar points in their pre-sale cycle.
“With some impressive movie releases this year so far, Deadpool & Wolverine is proving to be a force to be reckoned with, having huge pre-sales leading into its theatrical debut,” said Jerramy Hainline, EVP of Fandango, via a press release provided to Comic Book Club. “With summer in full swing, it is exciting to see the high anticipation fans have for this new Deadpool film, a movie that must be seen on the big screen.”
While this does sound impressive — and mind you, it mostly is — this year has, to put it lightly, not been the wildest box office year on record. In fact, up until two months ago, box office forecasters were prognosticating The End Of Movie Theaters As We Know Them. Naturally, that was a fair amount of gloom and doom journalism, but other than Dune Part Two and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, nothing was making that much of an impact. Cut to the release of Inside Out 2, a genuine theatrical phenomenon, Despicable Me 4 coming out strong, and even smaller hits like MaXXXine doing huge numbers for A24, followed by Longlegs doing the same for NEON this weekend, and movies are back, baby!
But they’re all predicted to pale in comparison to Deadpool & Wolverine. The Marvel movie starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, the only MCU movie all year, has been insanely hyped and gotten promising advance footage screenings around the world. In addition, the first two Deadpool movies were huge hits at the box office, passing $700 million plus on a relatively frugal budget (for superhero movies).
While we won’t know how the movie fares until it opens in theaters on July 26, 2024, this Fandango report is a promising start. And to help things along, you can get the Deadpool Premium Package — which yes, includes a friendship bracelet.
