Iron Fist, aka Danny Rand, is turning 50 this year — but he may not live to see 51. That’s because Marvel is teasing a “tragic turn” for Danny Rand in the publisher’s upcoming Iron Fist 50th Anniversary Special #1.
There are actually several stories from different eras of Iron Fist in the issue. But the most eyebrow-raising one is likely the story from writer Jason Loo and artist Whilce Portacio, which via press release provided to Comic Book Club teases it will “put the ‘immortal’ in Immortal Fist.”
“Ever since I saw Danny Rand in those green and yellows, I was a fan—not just because we shared a name, but because that look was so iconic!” Editor Danny Khazem shared. “So to be able to work on this issue with all of these talented creators is a huge honor and pleasure. Danny’s story has spanned five decades, but the legacy of the Iron Fist spans MILLIONS of years! And this issue dares to be the next step in not only the future of Danny Rand, but the future of the entire Iron Fist lore! Strap in as this is just the beginning!”
That curious bit out of the way, the issue will also include Chris Claremont and Lan Medina on a classic Danny Rand tale co-starring Wolverine; Alyssa Wong and Von Randal teaming up Lin Lie and Pei; Justina Ireland and Elena Casagrande teaming up Iron Fist with the Daughters of the Dragon; and Frank Tieri and Ty Templeton reteaming the Heroes for Hire.
You can check out a slew of covers for the issue, including one by David Aja, as well as unlettered pages, below. The Iron Fist 50th Anniversary Special #1 will hit stores on August 14.
