This is Comic Book Club News for July 12, 2024.
Writer Chuck Tingle Has Joined BOOM! Studios’ Horror Anthology, Hello Darkness:
Yesterday, we brought you the news that Penguin Random House has purchased BOOM! Studios! Well, PRH might want to check that receipt, because writer Chuck Tingle has joined the comic book publisher’s upcoming anthology, Hello Darkness.
Said Tingle via a press release provided to Comic Book Club: “As an avid graphic novel reader, I’m thrilled and honored to create a story with BOOM! Studios for Hello Darkness. This is an idea I’ve had simmering for a while, but it never seemed quite right for a novel. Bringing it to this timeline as a beautiful, horrific and vivid comic is the perfect medium, and I can’t wait for buckaroos to read it.”
Tingle is a two-time Hugo Award finalist and USA Today bestseller. However, the mysterious, pink-masked author is probably known for some… Other things… That I won’t repeat on this family-friendly podcast, but you can Google at Google dot com.
The first issue of Hello Darkness hits July 24, 2024, with stories by Garth Ennis and Becky Cloonan, as well as a Something is Killing the Children story by James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’edera. Tingle’s placement in the initial seven issue run is TBA, but we’ll assume it’s somewhere in the back end.
DC’s Market Share Has Declined Below 20%:
Over the past few months, we’ve been discussing the precipitous decline in DC Comics and graphic novels that have popped up on the sales charts. And despite some recent wins thanks to their Compact Comics line, DC’s market share dropped below 20% in the second quarter of 2024.
The news comes via ICv2, which is working off of ComicHub’s system. And in the interest of clarity, since this is a random sampling of 125 of the 3,000 stores that use ComicHub, it may not be entirely accurate; but it does give us a sense of general scale.
According to the site, DC went from 21.6% of the comic market in the first quarter, down to 17.8% in the second quarter. Meanwhile, Marvel went up from 38.9% to 39.2%.
IDW also went up from 4.2% to 7.1%, and BOOM! Studios went from 3.3% to 3.6%. Image Comics, by comparison, holds 12.9% of the market.
While this isn’t great news, it is a relative marker of other, smaller publishers making gains in the industry while DC dips. Will their rumored, upcoming Absolute Comics line turn things around? We’ll have to wait until next quarter to see.
DC Launches Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Covers:
…Or maybe all DC needs is a series of covers tying into Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. The publisher will be rolling out variant covers featuring the Ghost With The Most throughout September, mashing Michael Keaton’s character up with, in some cases, Michael Keaton.
Specifically, Joe Quinones’ cover of Batman #152 will feature Beetlejuice and the 1989 Keaton version of Batman. All it needs is a Mr. Mom in there somewhere, and we’re good to go.
The variants will also appear on Superman #17 and Wonder Woman #21, both at the end of August, as well as others throughout the month.
For Comic Book Club News, I’m Alex Zalben. And oh no, I said Beetlejuice three times! Oh no, four times now!
