Skybound Announces G.I. Joe Title From Energon Universe:
I know you can’t see my face right now, but imagine my lack of shock at the announcement that Hasbro, Skybound, and Image Comics are launching an all-new ongoing G.I. Joe series set in the Energon Universe.
Written by Joshua Williamson, with art by Tom Reilly, the book will bring together the threads that have been woven through the miniseries Duke, Scarlett, Cobra Commander, and Destro, to finally bring G.I. Joe up against Cobra, with the battle of the Autobots and Decepticons in the background.
Said Williamson via a press release provided to Comic Book Club: “Finally! The team is together! The response to the mini-series that led to this moment has been phenomenal, it’s been exciting to see lifelong fans of the iconic series and new readers come together to support G.I. JOE in the Energon Universe. What has come before was just a glimpse into the massive world full of action and drama that we’re bringing with the new ongoing series. Now it’s time to amp up the story as newly formed G.I. Joe and Cobra meet for the first time! Our first issue rocks the Energon Universe in major ways with big moments we’ve been dying to unleash.”
Skybound promises the first issue will not only introduce a brand new character, and introduce some familiar faces, it will also “change everything you think you know about G.I. Joe.” Given I don’t know a lot about G.I. Joe, that shouldn’t be too much of an issue for me, personally.
G.I. Joe #1 hits stores on November 13.
Marvel Reveals Sentinels Series And Teases A Rumored Mystique Series:
If you thought Marvel was done announcing X-Men books, boy you were wrong. Really wrong. Because not only did they announce a new miniseries called Sentinels, they’re also teasing another that is likely a Mystique solo series.
Let’s start with the confirmed book. Titled Sentinels, the five issue minisieres will follow survivors of previous Marvel events like King in Black, World War Hulk and Secret Empire who are retrofitted into deadly cyborg Sentinals and tasked with tracking down dangerous mutants like Omega Red.
Written by Alex Paknadel with art by Justin Mason, with Paknadel saying via press release: “As an X-fan going back to my first set of teeth, I couldn’t be prouder or more excited to share SENTINELS with the fans. This book is about flawed human beings doing a dirty job for a dirty cause, and Justin Mason and I are determined to make you care about each and every one of them. Whatever your expectations are going in, I promise this book will surprise you.”
The first issue will hit October 9.
The second comic is just a teaser with a shadowy figure in front of a series of Marvel characters, with the tagline “Who is mutantkind’s most wanted?” The silhouette certainly looks like Mystique, and Declan Shalvey’s signature is in the corner of the provided art, while Shalvey has been teasing a “Project Raven” to be announced this week. So yeah, this is probably a Mystique solo book, written and drawn by Shalvey.
That book will also hit in October.
Joe Kelly Takes Over Amazing Spider-Man:
A week ago we reported that Zeb Wells would be leaving Amazing Spider-Man at some point in future after issue #58 of the title. And now it looks like we know who will take over next: Joe Kelly.
The news, as reported by AIPT, comes from a surprising source… The cover of Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu #0, the secret ashcan book Marvel sent to comic book stores this week, which we also reported about here on the podcast. However, the bigger surprise is that on the cover it plugs “Plus– A new era of The Amazing Spider-Man from Joe Kelly begins here!” With the new Moon Knight book hitting in October, will Joe Kelly’s run start then? And who will join him on art? We’ll have to stay tuned for more info.
For Comic Book Club News, I’m Alex Zalben. And fun fact: the G.I. in G.I. Joe stands for that I’m “generally interested” in these books.
