DC is about to make so much green on Swamp Thing, a new live-action drama premiering on DC Universe. That would be DC’s digital service, which launches later this year!
The Swamp Thing series isn’t slated to launch until 2019, but has a script-to-series order for the one-hour drama. It’s produced by Atomic Monster in association with Warner Bros. Television, from Executive Producers: James Wan (Atomic Monster), Mark Verheiden, Gary Dauberman, Michael Clear (Atomic Monster), with Co-Producer: Rob Hackett (Atomic Monster).
The series is written by Mark Verheiden and Gary Dauberman, based on DC characters created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson.
Here’s the logline for the series:
When CDC researcher Abby Arcane returns to her childhood home of Houma, Louisiana, in order to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus, she develops a surprising bond with scientist Alec Holland — only to have him tragically taken from her. But as powerful forces descend on Houma, intent on exploiting the swamp’s mysterious properties for their own purposes, Abby will discover that the swamp holds mystical secrets, both horrifying and wondrous — and the potential love of her life may not be dead after all.
Swamp Thing has been a staple of the DC Comics universe since the 1970s, including a heavily lauded run by writer Alan Moore. It’s also been adapted for screen before:
– In 1982, Wes Craven wrote and directed a movie staring Ray Wise, which spawned a sequel.
– In 1990, USA aired a live-action series that ran for three seasons.
– Also in the 1990s, Fox produced an animated series that aired in Canada, and later in syndication on SYFY.
So while this won’t be the first time Swampy has been on screen, it’ll definitely be a big relaunch for the character. The Swamp Thing series will join the live action Titans and Metropolis, as well as the animated Young Justice: Outsiders and Harley Quinn series.
The behind the scenes folks are no strangers to the DC Universe. Wan is directing (and co-wrote) Aquaman, and Verheiden produced Constantine and Smallville.
