Can Cloak And Dagger Touch? Maaaaaybe

can Cloak and Dagger touch

If you’ve been watching Freeform and Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger as religiously as we have, you may have noticed one curious tweak to their powers. Every time Tandy (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone (Aubrey Joseph) get close, their powers blast them backwards. So, can Cloak and Dagger touch?

Good question, friends, and the answer is a little more complicated than it may seem on the surface.

Can Cloak and Dagger touch in the comics?

In the Marvel comics the show is based on, Ty and Tandy can touch. Sort of. We’ve explored a bit about what makes their powers tick previously (and whether they’re married). But to delve into the touchy-touchy a bit more, that thing where they fly into a wall if they get close is an original creation for TV.

In fact, part of the reason folks think they’re married/dating is they’re almost always depicted as embracing in the books. Mostly, they’re just very close; particularly as Dagger’s light helps feed Cloak’s never-ending hunger.

But also technically, Cloak doesn’t really have a body so much as a swirling mass of Darkforce energy. He can touch things, including Dagger, but he’s not a person; he’s a portal. Dagger can also touch him (his face looks human and fleshy in particular). But again, it’s a little unclear whether he has a body to touch.

Can Cloak and Dagger touch on TV?

This is very much a wait and see situation, but we’ve got some theories. First of all, it’s a time tested trope of the genre to have the main couple unable to touch. Ty and Tandy on screen aren’t really in love (yet). But everything from Buffy and Angel unable to sleep together for fear of him losing his soul (on Buffy the Vampire Slayer), to Rogue and Gambit unable to touch in the X-Men comics is a great way of building romantic tension.

So it seems pretty reasonable to think that A) they’ll fall in love, and B) they won’t be able to touch each other.

Buuuuut. In the season premiere “First Light” Tandy and Ty were both in the water after the Roxxon platform exploded. They reached out their hands to each other, and then woke up on the beach, safe. We never saw their hands touch, or how they got to safety. Was it Cloak’s powers transporting them? Or something else?

Regardless, it’s possible they did touch post-getting powers at some point, and maybe we’ll find out more once those holes are filled in. It’s also possible (crazy theory time) that Ty dons the cloak so he can be covered, and touch Tandy.

So for now, the answer is “maybe.” I’m going to go out on a limb and say we’ll get to see the full repercussions of them touching at some point. I’ll also go out on a limb and say nothing good will come of it. But we’ll have to stay tuned and see.
